Free Laphroaig Single Malt Scotch Tasting Feb. 25 at Houston Bar Reserve 101

Single malt scotch aficionados can enjoy a free tasting of Laphroaig at 8 p.m. on Feb. 25 hosted by Houston downtown bar Reserve 101 (http://www.reserve101.com) at the establishment, corner of Dallas and Caroline.

Reserve 101, Houston's downtown whiskey bar, is presenting a free tasting of Laphroaig single malt Scotch with seldom-heard inside analysis and historical commentary from Global Laphroaig Ambassador Simon Brookings, on Friday, Feb. 25, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the establishment on the corner of Caroline and Dallas, across from House of Blues.

Single malt Scotch comes in several varieties named for regions of Scotland -Highland, Lowland and Islay-with the latter producing by far the peatiest products, meaning they taste of-well, peat-the spongy, earthy stuff you find in Scotland where old bogs used to be. Laphroaig is known for its especially peaty flavor and can be an acquired taste. But Scotch aficionados love the stuff.

"You can't beat peat," says Reserve 101 co-owner and whiskey guru Mike Raymond. "Laphroaig's brand ambassador will take tasters through the intricacies of Islay single malt.

The Laphroaig Distillery, located on the island of Islay in Laphroaig Bay off the Scottish coast where the Atlantic weather helps give the libation its distinctive flavor, has been the site of legal and illegal distilleries for 200 years.

Reserve 101's free tasting will feature Laphroaig's 10-year and quarter cask single malts.
The bar stocks 130 varieties of whiskey, plus other liquors, and specializes in Signature Cocktails, Martinis and homemade infusions of liquor with ingredients such as peppers, apples, peaches, pecans and cinnamon-even tobacco. It's open seven days a week, with Happy "Hour" specials running Monday through Friday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
