Former CNN network anchor and journalist Carol Costello teams up with Evergreen Podcasts for Carol Costello Presents: Blind Rage, a podcast about a survivor-turned-detective who became an indispensable part of the team investigating the crime against her. In the new series, Costello revisits the brutal attack of Phyllis Cottle, a woman savagely assaulted on her way to work in Akron, Ohio, in March of 1984.

Before her 18 years at CNN covering stories like 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and the Pulse Nightclub massacre, Costello was a 22-year-old college senior psyched to be manning the phones at WAKR/TV23 in Akron, Ohio. Cottle's horrific story was her first big assignment and it left a life-long impression. Costello shares how Cottle's courage impacted her as a rookie reporter and as a young woman struggling to be heard.

"I've wanted to share Phyllis Cottle's story for years. Finally, it's time for the world to know about a courageous survivor who became a symbol of strength, ingenuity, and wisdom." Costello offered. "Her story is tragic, but that's not her full story. Her life in her words, 'had a purpose' after she escaped her attacker."

In 2019, parole was denied for Cottle's attacker Samuel Herring. Herring was convicted of brutally attacking Cottle on that fateful day, permanently blinding her. Herring was sentenced to nearly 300 years in prison.

Carol Costello Presents: Blind Rage debuts on Jan. 24, 2023. The podcast will examine how Phyllis Cottle escaped her attacker, how she never panicked during her hours-long ordeal, and how she came to control her own narrative as reporters descended upon her, and her family. The show will forever change the true crime genre.

"We're honored to be working with a journalist of Carol's caliber, especially given her personal experience with this case," says Gerardo Orlando, Senior VP of Content for Evergreen. "Carol's interviews with Phyllis Cottle and her recollections covering this story as a young reporter in the 1980s really help this podcast stand out, which is difficult to do in the ever-expanding true crime category."
