Folkteller Publishing Launches Graphic Novel and Film Project
Detroit, Michigan, October 22, 2014 (Newswire.com) - As the year begins to wind down and Halloween approaches, there’s no slowing for the Nain Rouge and the people at Folkteller. After releasing the third and final book of the Nain Rouge trilogy in July, co-creators Josef Bastian and Carl Winans prepare for their first graphic novel based on the Nain Rouge legend.
The Nain Rouge Graphic Novel, richly illustrated by renowned comic book artist, Patrick McEvoy, was written long before the city’s current economic woes. It is based in a financially challenged Detroit and centers around the 300-hundred year old legend of a red dwarf who appears as a harbinger of doom, often before negative events. Two teen friends learn of his curse and seek to drive him from the city with the power of positive thought and action.
"By creating the Cryptofolk genre, we're looking to bring greater awareness and interest to obscure local legends and folklore. To that, we're developing a publishing platform to make these stories more accessible and sharable to a larger audience."
Carl Winans, Digital Storyteller
Worldwide Distribution
The Nain Rouge Graphic Novel is being released and distributed in partnership with Caliber Comics. Caliber Comics was established in 1989 by Gary Reed and since that time has published over 1300 comics and graphic novels, helping to launch the careers of some of today's leading comic writers and artists.
From Books to Comics to Films
Equally exciting is the announcement that a short Nain Rouge film will be produced beginning in 2015. This film, entitled, “Nain Rouge: The Curse” is actually a prequel to the first book in the Nain Rouge trilogy. All of this activity leads up to the development of a feature film now in pre-production.
“We are so excited to share this wonderful story with the world in so many different ways,” said Bastian. “Now people can experience the Nain Rouge by reading the books, seeing him in Patrick’s fantastic artwork or watching him come to life on film. This is what Cryptofolk is all about.”
Cryptofolk - Immersive Storytelling
The Nain Rouge series is the first of what Bastian and Winans term as a new genre –Cryptofolk; that is, a new style of storytelling that resurrects old and obscure folklore and legends from around the world. It uses descriptive narrative and various multimedia applications to present stories that are thought provoking, visually rich, and accessible to a global audience.
Winans notes, “By creating the Cryptofolk genre, we’re looking to bring greater awareness and interest to obscure local legends and folklore. To that, we’re developing a publishing platform to make these stories more accessible and sharable to a larger audience.”
