Federal Government Is Again Unable to Meet the Small Business Contracting Goals

The federal government couldn't met the small business contracting goals for the fiscal year 2012. This is the 12th consecutive year where officials have failed to meet the target.

Recently Advance 8a, an 8a certification consultant firm, announced that this is another year where the federal government couldn't meet the small business contracting goals.

About 22.25% federal contracting dollars went to the small business last year as per the SBA. The federal contracting dollars has been higher than that of the fiscal year 2011, which was 21.65% but it has not been able to meet the goal of 23% set by Congress. This is the 12th consecutive year where officials have failed to meet the target. The federal government fell short of its objectives for women owned businesses and companies in economically disadvantaged areas.

Todd Luttenegger, the man behind Advance 8a said, "The federal government has only missed the goal of 23% set by the Congress for the fiscal year 2012. But it has surely made progression in comparison to the federal contracting dollars of 2011. It's really very disappointing."

There are few bright spots as well. Officials have been able to meet their goals for service disabled veterans owned small business-3% of the government contracts. This has been for the first time since 1999. A record number of agencies were able to meet their contracting goals. But according to Todd, it is ridiculous to celebrate this news.

Sam Graves, House Small Business Committee Chairman Rep. termed the government's continuing failure as "simply unacceptable". He added, "The Obama administration should anyhow meet this goal from the next year; that's called efficient governance. Moreover, improving the small business opportunities through federal contracting creates jobs and saves taxpayer money."

Before Obama started his second term, he signed legislation for encouraging the agency leaders to take their goals for the small businesses seriously. The White House has even backed the legislation for raising the yearly small business contracting goals, despite the federal government's constant failure to meet the target.
