February - Month for Pets' Dental Health

The entire month of February (1-29) has been declared as the National Pet Dental Health Month by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).

The entire month of February (1-29) has been declared as the National Pet Dental Health Month by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). The event has been organised to draw attention to oral health care for pets and the dental problems which may occur in dogs and cats, which if left untreated, could not only cause bad breath, loss of teeth and other disorders of the mouth, but also lead to serious illnesses such as heart, lung, liver and kidney infections.

As part of the event, the Association has launched a Veterinary Toolkit for members which, according to the AVMA, “makes it easy to educate clients on the importance of dental care and encourage them to bring their pets to the clinic for regular exams”. The most important elements for pets’ sound oral health care, as emphasised by this toolkit are proper nutrition, brushing of teeth and regular checkups and cleaning.

Although this concept has been introduced by the AVMA, pets’ oral health is a matter for concern in any country including in the United Arab Emirates and Dubai.

The reason why a pet owner should pay attention to their furry friend’s oral health is because 80 per cent of dogs and 70 per cent of cats are likely to develop some form of oral disease by the time they are three years of age. Particles of food, bacteria and saliva can combine between the gums and teeth and cause tartar buildup. Over a period of time, it can cause periodontal disease or gum disease. As explained earlier, they could lead to even more serious health issues, if neglected.

Brushing the pet’s teeth is the easiest way of prevention. The AVMA recommends daily brushing of a pet dog’s teeth. However, since this may not always be feasible, especially if the particular dog doesn’t enjoy the activity, so at least once every two days would be good. There are floss rope balls in the market which may be a fun and playful method to get dogs involved in the activity of cleaning their teeth in between brushings. Anti-bacterial supplements which can be mixed into their drinking water are also recommended. A routine of oral health care which they also enjoy would be ideal for the well-being of the pet and peace of mind of the owner.

Proper dental hygiene is even more important when it comes to smaller breeds of dogs. Since there is the tendency for their teeth to crowd in the mouth, they stand an even higher chance of developing dental diseases. Annual checkups with the vet are recommended for all pets to ensure sound oral health.

One way to ensure that your pet’s health remains in optimum condition for as long as possible is to get health animals in the first place.
