February is American Heart Month — Seeking to Raise Awareness About Heart Disease, the Leading Cause of Death in the US

HealthyYOU Vending fights back against heart disease by stocking healthy vending machines with heart healthy snack and meal options.

February is American Heart Month sponsored by The American Heart Association. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women. Every year, one in four deaths is caused by heart disease resulting in more than 17.9 million deaths each year. By 2030, this number is projected to rise to more than 23.6 million.

Nearly half of all Americans have at least one risk factor for heart disease, such as high blood pressure, obesity, physical inactivity or an unhealthy diet. Risk also increases with age.

Over the past several decades we have learned much about factors that contribute to heart disease, how to monitor those triggers, and ways to treat and prevent them. We know that individuals can live longer and better lives by refraining from tobacco use, maintaining an optimal blood pressure and a healthy weight, eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly.

HealthyYOU is dedicated to raising awareness about heart disease and reducing the number of Americans who suffer from heart disease every year, by providing healthier food, drink and snack choices, both on-the-go and at work.

HealthyYOU is dedicated to raising awareness about heart disease and reducing the number of Americans who suffer from heart disease every year, by providing healthier food, drink and snack choices, both on-the-go and at work. HealthyYOU Vending offers over 2,500 healthy vending products.

Some heart-healthy snack/meal options commonly found in HealthyYOU Vending machines include:

• Oatmeal – Oatmeal is high in soluble fiber which can lower cholesterol. “It acts as a sponge in the digestive tract and soaks up the cholesterol so it is eliminated from the body and not absorbed into the bloodstream,” says Lauren Graf, a registered dietician and co-director of the Cardiac Wellness Program at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City.

• Dark chocolate – Several studies have now shown that dark chocolate may benefit your heart, including a study in 2012 that found that daily chocolate consumption could reduce nonfatal heart attacks and strokes in people at high-risk for them. The findings applied only to dark chocolate, meaning chocolate made up of at least 60-70% cocoa. Dark chocolate contains flavonoids, called polyphenols, which may help blood pressure, clotting and inflammation.

• Nuts – This includes almonds, walnuts, pistachios, peanuts and macadamia nuts, all of which contain good-for-your-heart fiber. They also contain vitamin E, which helps lower bad cholesterol. And some nuts, like walnuts, are high in omega-3 fatty acids.
