Expanded Group Fitness Schedule At JR's Gym

Aspen Ski Conditioning, Spin and even Strip Tease Classes for all. At the newly renovated JR's Gym there is something for everyone including martial arts, yoga, pilates, massage, rock climbing and aquatics.

ASPEN, COLORADO - Jean Robert's Gym recently bulked up, and its group fitness schedule did too. The upstairs gym on Hyman Avenue tripled in size by taking over a downstairs location, and added more than 15 classes to its weekly lineup of group fitness offerings, including instruction in spin, ski conditioning, weight, yoga and even a strip tease class. The best part: They are all open to the public regardless of membership with the gym.

For more than 20 years, Jean-Robert Barbette has owned and operated Jean-Robert's Gym. Last fall, he expanded into the space formerly occupied by the Aspen Athletic Club, and opened a more casual, 12,000-square foot fitness club called JR's Gym. Besides the traditional personal training and weight-room options, as well as a swimming pool and rock-climbing wall, members and guests can explore a robust exercise schedule.

"Group fitness is great for a number of reasons," says Rachelle Edinger, group fitness director for Jean-Robert's and JR's gym. "It's a social thing, people can get together and form friendships with people that they are working out with. There's also the motivation of an instructor, meaning you will typically work out harder. It's like having one-on-one instruction, but group fitness is still cheaper than personal training."

In an effort to appeal to locals, JR's Gym offers reasonably priced memberships, as well as daily drop-in rates, which include most classes, for people who are only seeking the group fitness experience. Drop-in rates are $20, which includes full-day access to the gym and its facilities.

In addition, this autumn JR's Gym is hosting a nine-week ski conditioning series. This is free for members, or only $10 per class for nonmembers. The program begins Sept. 21 and runs through late November, just in time to hit the slopes.

Other popular classes include Cardio Blast, 30-minutes Abs, and Butts and Guts, created and taught by Edinger herself, who holds a Sports and Exercise Science degree. Hatha Yoga, Power Yoga and general yoga classes are also available.

"Certain classes focus on specific areas," she says. "Sometimes people don't know what they should be doing to work on their butt or abs, and through these classes they can learn more exercises as well as ways to focus on different muscle groups."

JR's Gym, located at 720 E. Hyman Ave. in downtown Aspen, offers daily passes for $20, weekly passes for $58, and monthly memberships for $128. The gym is open Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and then from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Besides group fitness, members and guests can take advantage of instruction in martial arts, personal training, rock climbing, and aquatics.

Jean-Robert Barbette has owned and operated Jean-Robert's Gym for more than 20 years. This penthouse facility focuses on private to semi-private fitness classes that use state-of-the-art equipment. Downstairs, JR's Gym centers on traditional family fitness. For more information, please visit our website.
