EC Systems Implemented a System for Railway Lines Codification

In October EC Systems together with AGH University of Science and Technology and Geotronics finished a 9-months-long project of design and implementation of a commercial version of a system managing the process of railway lines codification for PKP PLK, the owner of railway infrastructure in Poland.

n October EC Systems together with AGH University of Science and Technology and Geotronics finished a 9-months-long project of design and implementation of a commercial version of a system managing the process of railway lines codification for PKP PLK, the owner of railway infrastructure in Poland. Being nearly €2,5M worth, the project consists of three main modules:

  • a module used for measurement of the railway track shoulder, mounted on a EM-120 railway trolley,
  • an analytical module, processing the data acquired by the trolley,
  • an operational module, providing assistance to the employees dealing with extraordinary packages transport.

During the project EM-120 trolley was equipped with Riegl VQ-450 laser scanner, high resolution monochromatic photo cameras and data storage infrastructure. The scanner allows for continuous track shoulder measurement which lasts for many days, even at 100 km/h speed and generates an average of 500 MB of data each minute of operation.

The acquired data is gathered in Oracle 11g database with Spatial and Graph option. The analytical module is responsible for codification of segments of railway lines. Eventually, the module will store and process up to 120 TB of data. If necessary, the module also allows for visualization and manual data processing for land surveyors. The operational module, that also use Oracle 11g database with Spatial option, supports the approval process of requests for extraordinary packages transport. To facilitate this process, ensure compatibility and follow the business strategy chosen by PKP PLK, the codification system is integrated with the existing systems, namely POS (Network Description Management) and SILK (Railroad Information System).

Additionally, during the project EC Systems delivered server infrastructure, workstations and all the necessary licenses.
