Dr. Ronald Wright Jr.: Kids' Healthy Mouths Educates Parents and Children Regarding Dental Health

A new collaborative effort between the Ad Council and Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives aims to reach out to youth through public service commercials As a respected endodontist, Dr. Ronald Wright Jr. commends this widespread initiative.

According to a new article from The Wall Street Journal reveals a new partnership designed to encourage children to adopt better dental care practices. The article explains that the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives-a coalition of more than 35 leading dental health organizations-and the Ad Council have collaborated with media outlets to design "Kids' Healthy Mouths, [a] joint national multimedia public service campaign designed to teach parents and caregivers, as well as children, about the importance of oral health and the simple ways in which they can help prevent oral disease." Working with media outlets such as DreamWorks Animation, Sesame Street and Cartoon Network, the campaign hopes to establish a widespread effort to inform children of proper brushing habits. Dr. Ronald Wright Jr. , leading endodontist in Tennessee commends this new program and encourages children to adopt healthy brushing practices.

According to a survey released by the Ad Council, only 44 percent of American parents report that their child brushes their teeth twice a day or more. Further statistics listed in the article connect poor dental health in children to parent involvement: 60 percent of parents with children ages 12 or younger report that they do not regularly help their child brush their teeth or check to make sure they've done a good job.

Dr. Ronald Wright Jr. believes that parents are essential to instilling proper dental care habits in future generations. He states, "Proper hygiene and a healthy mouth start by modeling good habits at home at an age before children even have teeth. Parents should be involved in their children's brushing and flossing habits by monitoring their techniques and inspecting their work. There are few reasons a child who has access to fluoridated water should develop cavities if we as parents are doing our job."

According to the article, the public service announcements will focus on how children spend their time; they follow the logic that children who waste hours playing video games or watching TV can afford to spend two minutes to fully brush their teeth and prevent decay. Dr. Ronald Wright Jr. notes that the widespread campaign should certainly encourage younger generations, but parents must make sure that they follow through. To make brushing attractive to children, Dr. Ronald Wright Jr. recommends children's electric toothbrushes that have lights or noises to signal when a child has brushed an appropriate time of two minutes.
