Dr. Ramy Fahim Named A.O. Faculty

Formed by a group of Swiss surgeons in 1958, the AO or Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen aims to refine surgical practice so that the outcome for the patient could be optimized, "Transforming Surgery - Changing Lives"

The AO Foundation is a medically guided nonprofit organization led by an international group of surgeons specialized in the treatment of trauma and disorders of the musculoskeletal system. It had its origins in a Swiss study group, Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen, which is German for "Association for the Study of Internal Fixation" or AO). This association was revolutionary in the improvement and development of instruments and implants for operative fracture treatment.

Founded in Switzerland in 1958, AO today promotes one of the most extensive networks of currently more than 12,000 scientists, surgeons, and operating room personnel in over 100 countries. The aim of the AO pioneers was to refine surgical practice so that the outcome could be optimized. The increased growth led to the setting up of the AO Regions in the Asia Pacific, Latin America, and North America, all done with the focused support from the AO center in Switzerland.

The structure of AO involves its two functional areas. There are the Institutes and Clinical Divisions that conduct research, development, education, clinical investigation and approval of new devices or methods. Then there is the Management Board that supports, supervises and ensures implementation of the multitude of AO activities.

AO International or AOI was founded in 1972 to expand education and the teaching programs for surgeons on an international basis. In 1984, the AO/ASIF Foundation was created with an AO Board of Trustees comprising 90 leading trauma surgeons from throughout the world.

Since September 2009, there was an increased effort to build up collaborations with the AO surgeon network and clinical divisions, along with stronger academic connections to international universities and societies. In addition, they are at the forefront of high quality international conferences, editorial boards and societies, and holding keynote lectures.

On a regular basis, AO holds courses worldwide for Orthopedic Surgeons and other health professionals. Among these are hands-on experiences on using the latest implants as well as lectures from expert surgeons.
