Dementia alert: Did too much anesthesia kill President Reagan's brain cells?
Newport Beach, CA, October 19, 2016 (Newswire.com) - When President Reagan was shot in 1981, pulse oximetry was 9 years away from being deemed a standard of care by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). Prior to the 1996 FDA approval of the BIS brain monitor, anesthesia was given on the basis of body weight and brain stem signs (heart rate & blood pressure). In the official journal of the ASA, a recently published study from Australia where brain monitors are NOT used found a 30% incidence of dementia after open heart surgery. Reagan died years after his surgery from dementia.
Since 1996, the availability of direct brain response to anesthetics makes the patient potentially in control of their anesthetic dose based on the number from their forehead sensor but only if the device is used, something the ASA continues to vigorously resist endorsing as a standard of care. The non-profit Goldilocks Foundation’s goal is to make brain monitoring a standard of care, but that will require the same public demand that got fathers into delivery rooms for the births of their children.
