Does Roy Keane need a Coach?

Will the skillset that served Roy Keane so well as an elite football player serve him equally well as a coach? Experts dissect the issues in the International Journal of Sports Science and Coaching

Top football professional Roy Keane recently moved into coaching. Necessarily as a top professional he had the attributes the role demands: super-ability, determination, passion, mental toughness. But will those skills cross over into success in coaching?

Keane's progress is first looked at by Simon Jenkins (Leeds Met University) through the coaching concepts of Marshall Goldsmith, author of the best seller, "What Got You Here Won't Get You There". Jenkins, following Goldsmith, concludes that Keane is now in such a different role that the skill set which formerly made him eminent is largely irrelevant, and his performance in his new role would likely be enhanced by coaching or mentoring.

This view is then critiqued from a number of standpoints by distinguished contributors from the world of business coaching and from elite sport coaching. Contributors include: Professor Chris Brady, BPP Business School, London; Kai Peters, Ashridge; Nigel Redman, Rugby Football Union; Juri Hanin, KIHU-Research Institute for Olympic Sports, Finland; Howard Morgan, Leadership Research Institute, Santa Fe; Arnold LeUnes, Texas A&M University; Jonathan Passmore, Coaching Psychology, University of East London; Wade Gilbert, CSU Fresno; John Sullivan, Sports Psychology, University of Rhode Island. There are 27 critiques in total.

This special supplement to the International Journal of Sports Science and Coaching (Volume 5, Supplement 1 - http://multi-science.metapress.com/121504) represents an interesting and original departure in the relationship between sport and business. While bringing sport concepts into the world of business is not new, what is new is taking executive coaching into sport. And in this case, exploring them with a character as explosive and appealing as Roy Keane, creates a fascinating and illuminating piece of work.
