From time to time we keep seeing MS Word wannabe's sprout, with little or no success. And with their 2010 offering, Microsoft has taken the entire word processing concept to a new height, with great mix of interface and features. However, not everyone needs the advance features offered by MS Office applications, and if you're looking for a simple yet feature-rich word processor, check out DevVicky Word 2010.

It is a stable word processor that can handle a wide variety of file formats, including Microsoft's proprietary .docx as well as ODF. It has a nice mix of features without taxing the system's memory too much, offering great value to users with lower-spec systems.

The first noticeable thing about DevVicky Word is its familiar interface, along the lines of MS Word, thus not requiring any time to get accustomed to. Furthermore, every new document opens as a new tab instead of a separate window (tabbed interface), hence reducing clutter and making it easier to switch between documents.

There are seven drop-down menus that contain all the features that this program has to offer. They include File, Edit, View, Insert, Format, Table and Options. There is nothing complicated about the menus, and the functions offered are the standard ones that you can expect off of a modern word processing application.

An interesting capability of DevVicky Word 2010 is support for Mail Merge, something Microsoft just introduced in Word 2010. This feature enables a user to create documents (Letter, Emails, Fax, etc) that are essentially the same but contain unique elements such as recipient Name, Address, Contact No, City, State, etc. It helps user to create a document for multiple recipients more easily by just selecting recipient names and choosing the document. To understand more about mail merge and how this was implemented in MS Word 2010, go here.

DevVicky Word's implementation of mail merge is significantly different from that seen in Microsoft's product. It relies on XML database files to manage and add contact information. The mail merge feature is available by clicking the orb in top left corner of the software.
Other than the standard formatting features, there is little to be offered. A useful feature is the addition of Styles, which allow quick formatting of any text based on a predefined criterion. You may also insert text frames, which can be positioned either as a character or in geometric relativity to a paragraph or page.
The program also brings some nice conversion options on board. Documents can be converted to HTML and PDF, and there is a new ODT converter also present under the Options menu. You can also configure the spell checker and document reader under this menu. The document reader will actually read (speak) the document text for you.

DevVicky Word 2010 is Windows only, and was tested on Windows 7 32-bit.
