Deimira Paa Baidoo: 'Solar Powered Homes Are an Economic Necessity'

Custom home builder and entrepreneurial coach Deimira Paa Baidoo argues for the prioritization of solar power as both an economic and environmental necessity for new home buyers.

Solar Power

There is no more important consideration for the future value of a property than investing in, or buying an existing home that comes with solar panels, argues Deimira Paa Baidoo, a custom home builder and entrepreneur located in Calgary. Mr. Baidoo, who builds sustainable homes in Alberta through his company Melcom Homes, argues that existing economic trends, combined with upcoming environmental necessity, prioritizes the need for early installation of solar panels, along with the need for new home buyers to more strongly consider solar panels as part of their real estate considerations.

"Solar is traditionally viewed solely through an environmental lens," says Mr. Baidoo, "but it is increasingly becoming economically critical, both for the current costs of home ownership and for the long term value of the property."

Mr. Baidoo points specifically to what he sees as an increasingly likely economy in both Canada and throughout North America, as climate change and energy issues start to become more apparent to the general public. He points to several issues that he believes will represent the future of home ownership:

  • Energy costs from the power grid will continue to rise, leading to more expensive electricity bills. The monthly cost of solar panels will represent a cost savings over other forms of electricity.
  • Home values of properties without solar will decrease at a faster rate than properties that already have existing solar systems.
  • Advancements in consumer technology means that more homes will be equipped with multiple high energy devices even as the amount of energy used by these devices decrease, leading to a worsening of the energy crisis.

Mr. Baidoo also envisions a scenario where the government starts to mandate the installation of solar panels as a way to address the growing climate change threat. He also believes that mobility among homeowners is going to start to decrease with the rise in remote work, so homeowners are more likely to benefit from the long term value of solar once the system has been paid off.

"Solar panel systems are such an important part of addressing the challenges of climate change," says Mr. Baidoo, "but for those hesitant to make the switch to solar, the potential for financial and economic benefits as well proves that this is a high priority investment, and one that should offer long-term benefits for residential and commercial property owners."
