Dangers of Mass Produced Locks
Online, July 22, 2013 (Newswire.com) - Recently, a report was released that gave information to consumers that many more than likely did not realize. The truth of the matter is that locksmith's like Glen Peifer and Sam from "Houston Locksmith" knew along and stated, "It just doesn't make sense when you buy a lock and someone else has a key to it, period," said locksmith Sam Ohayon. "I would like to know that my key is the only one that fits the lock."
Mass produced locks actually have a great chance of allowing others to have a key to another home or even possibly more than one. The prices of deadbolts found at retail outlets are often very inexpensive; however, most consumers do not realize that these cheap locks may have the same exact key. In the majority of cases, the retailers that can create and sell these locks for under $10 often only have 10 or 20 different keys for the entire lot of locks manufactured.
Schlage is a great example of mass produced locks that manufacturers 30,000 different keys, however, they rotate the thousands of key codes they actually ship to retailers. No one actually realizes how often the inventory is rotated and exactly how many locks at the retail stores have the same exact key.
This goes for all lock and key manufacturers including Defiant, Schlage, Kwikset, and Gate House and even lesser known manufacturers that you can find at local outlets such as Home Depot, Lowe's and Walmart.
Today, security is more important than ever and with all those locks at great prices often using the same key for several different locks, it just makes sense that homeowners should opt for custom locks with custom keys. This is the only way to ensure that homes do not have the same key to enter as their neighbor.
