Cosmetic Surgery Guru reports on the rise of botches plastic surgery procedures in the UK
Online, January 21, 2010 (Newswire.com) - Rise of up to 50% in botched surgeries
Cosmetic Surgery Guru points to alarming comments made recently by top UK plastic Surgeon Matt Erdmann, who noted a rise of 50%in corrective procedures at Spire Washington Hospital in the past year.
"I would say I have done about 12 patients in the past year who all required surgery after it was done by someone else, or in another country, and they were dissatisfied with it," Erdmann said.
Patients seeking cheaper options can suffer in the long run
Cosmetic Surgery Guru warns that seeking cheaper forms of plastic surgery at home or, as if often the case, abroad could lead to costly and harmful results in the long term.
Dr. Erdmann lists the desire to cut costs among the main reasons for the spike in corrective procedures in the UK.
"I think it's a combination of things. There are more practitioners out there carrying out the surgery, who are not vetted, but may well be competitive in terms of price," Erdmann said. "Obviously, that's attractive, but they may not necessarily give the best long-term results."
NHS picking up the cost of corrective measures, but for how long?
Cosmetic Surgery Guru notes that because many botched plastic surgeries lead to infections, immediate medical help is almost always required. More often than not, the NHS will administer the corrective surgery.
The NHS safety net may not be there for long. Cosmetic Surgery Guru refers to announcements made earlier this year by the NHS that it would clamp down on coverage of botched plastic surgeries.
A spokesman for the Department of Health this month said it had already made clear that the NHS was only there to deal with emergencies.
Dr. Erdmann added: "If the problem is an infection, it needs to be acted on and patients cannot really pay for it, so the NHS takes the brunt."
No sign of slowdown in plastic surgery popularity
Cosmetic Surgery Guru reports that the demand for plastic surgery in the UK is at its highest point and growing rapidly, with a new survey by Spire Hospitals revealing that 79% of people in the North East think plastic surgery is more acceptable today, while fewer people view it as risky.
It has never been more crucial for patients to visit reputable plastic surgery clinics. Cosmetic Surgery Guru recommends Transform Cosmetic Surgery, which has a reputation for running several of the UK's best plastic surgery clinics.
