Columbus Metal Braces Pros Discuss White Spot Lesions
Online, July 25, 2012 (Newswire.com) - The columbus invisalign and orthodontics treatment experts at Carmen Orthodontics are talking about recent study results regarding fluoride therapy during treatment that can reduce the appearance of white spot lesions on teeth.
Researchers presented their findings at the International Association of Dental Research meeting in Brazil in June and discussed fluoride delivery during orthodontic treatment to prevent lesions- enamel demineralization.
The study's purpose was to determine if fluoride-releasing sealants could lessen tooth enamel demineralization, a known complication of orthodontics, according to the Australian Dental Association. White spot lesions develop because of prolonged plaque buildup on the teeth's surfaces, and can occur regardless of the treatment type- metal, ceramic or clear braces. Poor oral hygiene is the common culprit. These lesions make the teeth appear chalky. Surface erosion may also occur.
"Demineralization is almost always preventable with a sound oral hygiene regimen," says Dr. Ronald Carmen, who provides Columbus adult braces. "Orthodontist and dentistry professionals can take extra steps to help prevent this irreversible condition."
Lutheran University of Brazil in Canoas and Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre researchers compared the performance of two fluoride-releasing sealants: LED Pro Seal by Reliance Orthodontic Products, and Ortho-Coat by Pulpdent. Both products are designed to thwart enamel demineralization around brackets, according to an article on the Dr. Bicuspid website. Both sealants offered reduced enamel demineralization next to orthodontic brackets.
Enamel surfaces that underwent sealant treatment showed notable reductions in lesion depth when compared to the control group, the article stated. LED Pro Seal reduced lesions by more than 75 percent; Ortho-Coat by 54 percent.
