Coach Billy Slobin Leads Players to Excellence On & Off the Field

Senior Mortgage Loan Officer for Mortgage One and former Hawks player, Billy Slobin, recently arranged for some former players who have found post-football-career success to return to Harrison High School for a special day that not only celebrated their successes but hopefully served to inspire the younger players still seeking direction in life.

Former Hawks player, Billy Slobin, recently arranged for some former players who have found post-football-career success to return to Harrison High School for a special day that not only celebrated their successes but hopefully served to inspire the younger players still seeking direction in life.

Chris Roberson and Terrill Mayberry, 2001 and 2002 graduates, respectively, visited current players to discuss their experiences and provide motivation for success. The idea was spawned by Slobin, who has been the team’s strength and conditioning coach for more than 25 years. Seeing so many students pass through the school and participate on the team has made him recognize the importance of having good role models and realistic expectations.

Says Slobin, "I thought it would be great to have two of my favorite guys of all time, guys who put so much into the program and got so much out of it, address the kids. They're younger than me, and I thought the kids could identify with some young guys."

By focusing on the hard work and success of these former star players, Slobin hoped to make an impression on the younger players, and make sure they understood that they needed a plan for their life if they wanted to succeed beyond the football field. He chose Roberson and Mayberry because of their business tenacity, and the fact that they have shown such initiative. "That's a lesson they learned playing at Harrison. You have to outwork your opponent. You have to make more phone calls; you have to be relentless. You have to have mental toughness. You get up in the morning and you have no paycheck. You have to go and create one for yourself," explains Slobin.

The football program at Harrison High School has been very successful, with plenty of players eventually landing spots on pro teams. But, for those who are not playing after college, there has to be a plan. Roberson and Mayberry were instrumental in illustrating to the players how important their commitment to hard work really was. Slobin stated, "A big measure of their success was to due to the lessons they learned in the program – commitment, desire, never giving up, having the right mental approach.”

Slobin is no stranger to success off the field, either. He currently works as a Senior Mortgage Loan Officer for Mortgage One, and has been named one of the nation’s top 200 loan originators in Mortgage Originator magazine. Helping clients get mortgage financing for purchasing their homes has been a rewarding and successful career for him.
