CMAT launches monthly CMAT Soundz podcast

Birmingham's Centre for Music and Arts Technology launches a monthly podcast under the name CMAT Soundz will help from Birmingham City University Students.

CMAT Studios have teamed up with students at Birmingham City University to produce a monthly podcast of Birmingham music. The CMAT Soundz podcast will be available free every month and feature a track recorded by a Midlands artist at CMAT Record Studios (Handsworth, Birmingham). The first CMAT Soundz podcast will feature Handsworth's Laura Becher.

22-year old Laura started singing in choirs and as a solo artist at Ely Cathedral and King's College Cathedral at a young age. At 12 she won a school singing competition with a rendition of 'Close Every Door' and at 14 starred in a Stagecoach performance of Grease as well as playing the lead in numerous school plays.

At 19 she begun performing in concerts around Birmingham with her singing teacher and played the lead in Roger Jones musical 'The Inn Crowd' over Christmas 2008. In 2009 Laura entered a competition where she was voted in the top 100 singers and travelled to London for auditions with the heads of major record labels. She got into the top 10 and won an all-expenses paid trip to New York City for a week of recording with top recording artists Wyclef Jean and The Black Eyed Peas' Fergie.

Laura is recording a CD at CMAT to raise funds before she heads to Africa in September. While there she will be doing 6 months volunteer work in Malawi, helping to oversee the building of local schools and to help in the community with teaching, coaching and medical assistance.

The monthly podcast will tie in with CMAT's regular newsletter CMAT Soundz. The podcast's aim is to raise awareness of the huge variety of music being made in Birmingham, and trying to promote some of the best unsigned talent in the Midlands area.

Stu Perry, CMAT's Business Development Officer says:
" In tandem with BCU students Nick Moreton and Ryan Smith we are really pleased to have created this facility for local artists and to give them a platform to showcase their material to the music lovers of Birmingham and the UK."

Birmingham City University's involvement is down to 2 students from the Media and Communication course, held at the University's City North Campus. Nick Moreton and Ryan Smith are both second year students interested in helping develop the promotion of the local music community.

As Ryan explains:
"There's some great music to be heard from all walks of life across Birmingham. With such a diverse culture, there's more to Birmingham's music scene than just rock bands or hip-hop and grime artists."
"We wanted to showcase these more underground and diverse artists, and what better way than a free podcast. CMAT have been really helpful in setting this up with us," adds Nick.

The first CMAT Soundz podcast will go online from May 11th, but you can subscribe to the podcast now to hear more about the project from Stuart Perry.
