Toronto, Canada, August 7, 2014 (Newswire.com) - Clean My Carpet announced today that they are providing emergency flood services for all residential and commercial properties across the GTA and Durham Region. Toronto and surrounding areas have been affected by a couple of major flooding’s. The City of Toronto takes flooding incidents seriously and is taking steps to stop the overloading of the sewer system and reduce basement flooding. “The city and our emergency partners are encouraging everyone to stay home if you can,” said Kim Phillips, general manager of Burlington's community and corporate services, in a press release issued late Monday night.
The city is advising residents who are dealing with rising waters in flooded basements to shut off their power sources and their gas, if it is "safe to do so."
"If the situation is life-threatening, call 911," the city stressed. An emergency operation centre has been set up to help city officials deal with the flooding.
Actions taken by the city of Toronto include:
- Mandatory Downspout Disconnection Program requires homeowners to disconnect their home's downspout from the City's sewer system, where feasible, to help reduce sewer flows. (City of Toronto Municipal Code, Chapter 681, Sewers)
- Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program provides up to $3,400 to owners of single-family, duplex and triplex residential properties to install flood protection devices, including a backwater valve, a sump pump, and disconnecting external weeping tiles from the sewer system (by severing and capping connected pipes.)
