CJ Charles Jewelers: Education About Adults With Cystic Fibrosis Needed In Medical Community

Adults with cystic fibrosis are on the rise. Medical professionals are not always prepared to handle such cases. CJ Charles Jewelers is hoping that awareness about this deficit will prompt stronger educational guidelines for healthcare professionals.

ABC News reports that the medical community, which has provided a long list of medications and transplantation techniques that enhance the life expectancy of patients with cystic fibrosis, is not able to keep up with the needs of patients who are living longer with the disease. Often thought of as a "child's disease," this genetic condition is, due to these medical advances, now present in patients who are in their 30s and even their 40s. Vahid Moradi, owner of CJ Charles Jewelers, is urging the medical community to step up the educational efforts regarding adult cases of cystic fibrosis.

The ABC article focuses on the case of Brian Sercus, who lived with cystic fibrosis for 30 years. His mother, Beth Sercus, is a strong advocate for the fight against this condition and has undertaken the task of raising awareness regarding the "social and intellectual needs of adult CF patients." Sercus reports that her son, though college educated and in his 20s, was treated like a child by the medical community. Simply put, healthcare professionals did not know how to treat adult cases of his disease.

Moradi, who is an avid supporter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, believes that Sercus' work is extremely important in improving the quality of care that adult patients receive when being treated for this condition. He hopes that her active advocacy of the cause will raise awareness regarding the need for improved adult care.

"Cystic fibrosis is a devastating illness, but medical advancements have allowed patients to live longer, fuller lives," commented Moradi. "Unfortunately, it appears as though the actual application of this care has not bridged from children to adults. Even though these medical treatments are improving the survival rate of kids with cystic fibrosis, the same staff that is helping these children live into adulthood does not know how to approach their patients when they reach it, through no fault of their own."

Moradi supports Sercus in her work and hopes that, through increased educational efforts, medical professionals will begin to better understand and address the unique needs of adults who are living with and seeking treatment for cystic fibrosis.
