MORE THAN JUST A PLAYGROUND

The new state-of-the-art, purpose-built centre, underlines CIS’s focus on facilitating academic excellence in Kindergarten through play-based learning in environments that nurture creativity and exploration.

“Our new Outdoor Discovery Centre further enhances the richness of our Kindergarten programme by supporting our youngest learners in ways that extend far beyond the traditional playground,” explains Andrea Strachan, Vice Principal of CIS Kindergarten.

“The new space offers young children the opportunity to engage in sights, sounds, tastes and textures unique to the outdoors. It is also designed to help children develop important social, gross motor, math, observation and science skills,” adds Andrea.

Key Outdoor Discovery Centre Features

1. Mud garden. This is a great place for children to make experiments and learn about math concepts such as pouring, measuring and capacity. They also have an opportunity to play barefoot and experience what it feels like to have mud between their toes. Since so many children live in condos in Singapore they don’t always get the chance to enjoy the wonderful sensory experiences gained when interacting with nature in this way.

2. Edible vegetable garden. Children learn about the importance of health and nutrition as well as the role the environment plays in growing food. By tending to our gardens, they also learn to appreciate - and in turn CARE about - the environment.

3. Natural pond. This is a place children are drawn to immediately. They enjoy listening to the soothing waterfall and observing the colourful fish, turtles, dragonflies and plants living in and around the pond. Key learning outcomes include understanding water ecosystems and the important environmental functions it performs.

4. Art walls. Children collaborate together to produce large art murals using various types of media such as leaves, sticks and flowers from the garden. They also develop literacy skills by writing and creating different shapes on the walls.

5. Sound garden. Children discover and enjoy wonderful sounds generated by playing with chimes, plastic buckets and other items attached to the purpose-built walls. Special cables allow these items to be changed easily with alternative elements to produce lots of other great sounds.

6. Bicycle track, grassy hills and tunnels. These features are perfect for developing children’s gross motor skills and playing lots of fun games like ‘king of the hill’ and ‘hide and seek’. Children can also use the tunnels as a place to withdraw for quiet reflection.
