Chicago Activist Donates Nearly 70k to Humboldt Park Community

Donation Given to Assist With Rising Crime Rate and Foster Community in Humboldt Park

Theresa Siaw, a Chicago social community activist and the business development director of OMNI Healthcare, has recently funded two initiatives to help serve the Humboldt Park community. Theresa Siaw held a press conference and orientation for the Roberto Clemente Academy Summer Sports Program that she self-funded and launches July 2. Additionally, Ms. Siaw was one of the largest sponsors of the Puerto Rican Parade on June 16.

For the Roberto Clemente Sports Camp, nearly 350 Humboldt Park high school students were selected by the school and sponsored by Theresa Siaw. The program's overall goal is to help keep kids off the streets and reduce violent-crime rates. The launch of this six-week-long summer sports camp was founded by Theresa Siaw and Chicago Public Schools' Roberto Clemente Academy. Theresa Siaw donated nearly $34,000 for the 2018 program. Sports activities will include basketball, softball and swimming.

By working and living in Humboldt Park, we see many crime-related issues and are working to help create a better environment for the kids and parents in the area. By offering a free program, we help with that goal and reduce summer crime rates.

Humboldt Park's crime rate is 87 percent higher than the national average, with residents struggling to stay safe, avoid stray gunshots and gang violence. Last year, Rahm Emmanuel's One Summer Plus program, which provided high school students with summer jobs, led to violent-crime arrests falling by 43 percent.

"By working and living in Humboldt Park, we see many crime-related issues and are working to help create a better environment for the kids and parents in the area," said Siaw. "By offering a free program, we help with that goal and reduce summer crime rates."

This past weekend's Puerto Rican Parade allowed Chicagoans to celebrate their culture. Theresa Siaw was the largest sponsor of the parade, as she donated $35,000. This donation allowed the parade organizers to pay for the parade's two largest acts: Jerry Rivera and Ivy Queen.
