Today marks a unique chapter in the history of Our Town Earth ( www.ourtownearth.com ) as they will unveil their new website to Atlantic Canadians.

Our Town Earth is a virtual town - a social networking and information resource portal, created by and for persons with disabilities, their families and friends and caregivers.

Our Town Earth has now launched a 90 day Beta Testing phase of its site which will allow users from the province to log on and participate. Following this, they will then fully launch their site to users all around the globe.

The world's first virtual site of its kind, dedicated to persons with disabilities, even has its own Mayor. Dan MacNeil, a 43 year-old from Sydney Mines, Cape Breton and long-time advocate for persons with disabilities around the world, was sworn in as Mayor of Our Town Earth on April 2, 2009.

"As you can see... much has been accomplished in building 'Our Town,' smiles MacNeil during an interview where he displays the website on a computer screen. "But, there is more work to be done, and we are highly motivated in continuing our efforts in creating Our Town Earth for the citizens."

Our Town Earth has a specific aim to strengthen community involvement, provide opportunities, focus on the entrepreneurs, fair trade with others, fiscal responsibility, create education and awareness surrounding disability and engage and promote equality for every citizen.

ThreeTon New Media and Moxi Creative, both well known Nova Scotian based businesses, designed the website. However, there is a third crucial contributor to the building of this town: the Citizens of Our Town Earth.

"Our real goal in launching Our Town Earth is to break down any barriers that exist for persons with disabilities," says MacNeil. "Then we took a step back and realized the only way we could truly build a town just for the citizens is to let them build it. I want to create a democracy where each Citizen can contribute. I want to give voice to people who may not have been heard before."

So, become a citizen or an Our Town Earth Volunteer today, let your voice be heard and participate in the development of our exciting new Town.

By working together Our Town Earth will be a place where we all can benefit; a place to make new friends and share information; a place that promotes equality for all.

Building a town takes time; after all, Rome wasn't built in a day!
