Cara Mia Theatre Company presents Crystal City 1969
Online, December 1, 2009 (Newswire.com) - An original play by Dallasites David Lozano and Raul Treviño, Crystal City 1969 is based on the true story of Mexican-American students who walked out of school and into civil rights history.
Like many schools in the Southwest during the 1960's, Crystal City High School forbade Spanish on campus and Mexican and Chicano students were discouraged from university or professional career paths.
The students only wanted the same opportunities their caucasian schoolmates took for granted : to be a cheerleader, the homecoming queen, a varsity athlete or go off to college and chase their dreams.
Frustrated at their lack of options, with the guidance of 23-year-old Jose Angel Gutierrez, student leaders Severita Lara, Diana Serna, and Mario Treviño led a walkout that drastically changed Crystal City's future.
The Walkout garnered national attention as people from around the United States arrived to this small Texas town to support their effort. The three teenagers tactfully negotiated with the local School Board for three weeks until their demands for better treatment were met.
This is not just a Latino story.
It is a story of youth reaching beyond their boundaries.
