Cancer Treatment Center Offers Support Groups for Patients, Families Affected by Lymphedema

Highlands Oncology Group Connects Those Affected By Lymphedema With Support Group

Highlands Oncology Group (Highlands), Northwest Arkansas’ leading cancer treatment facility, and Hope Cancer Resources have started connecting patients and caregivers affected by lymphedema with a monthly support group.

The group will meet every fourth Wednesday of each month, beginning February, in the conference room at the Highlands facility in Rogers. A light lunch will be provided.

The next meeting will on March 23 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. A special guest speaker from Juzo, a lymphedema garment and high quality health products manufacturer, will be in attendance.

The support group will offer members the opportunity to share personal experiences, coping tips and strategies, emotional support and more. Educational and clinical support will also be provided by lymphedema professionals.

A support group shouldn't replace your standard medical care, but it can be a valuable resource to help you cope, according to the Mayo Clinic. While not everyone wants or needs support beyond that offered by family and friends, some people may find it helpful. A support group can help one cope better and feel less isolated.

Lymphedema occurs when lymph vessels are unable to adequately drain lymph fluid, usually from an arm or leg, according to the Mayo Clinic. Lymphedema can be either occur on its own (primary lymphedema) or it can be caused by another disease or condition (secondary lymphedema). Secondary lymphedema is more common than primary lymphedema. Surgical removal of the lymph nodes, cancer and cancer treatment by radiation are some of the known causes of lymphedema.

As the leading cancer treatment and research facility in Northwest Arkansas, Highlands is dedicated to the advancement of cancer treatment and to providing patients with the best possible care and results.
