NWA Oncology Group Encourages Cancer Prevention And Awareness In February

February is National Cancer Prevention Month and, as such, Highlands Oncology Group (Highlands), Northwest Arkansas’ leading cancer research group, supports cancer awareness and prevention in Northwest Arkansas.

About one-third of the most common cancers in the United States could be prevented by being healthy, being active and staying lean, according to American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) estimates.

In 2016, there will be an estimated 1,685,210 new cancer cases diagnosed and 595,690 cancer deaths in the US., according to American Cancer Society (ACS) statistics. Cancer is a leading cause of death in the United States and throughout the world. Much of the suffering and death from cancer could be prevented by more systematic efforts to reduce tobacco use, improve diet and physical activity, reduce obesity, and expand the use of established screening tests, according to the ACS.

The AICR recommends the following habits to protect oneself from common cancers: be as lean as possible without becoming underweight, be physically active for at least 30 minutes a day (limit sedentary habits), avoid sugary drinks, eat more vegetables, fruits, whole grains and legumes, limit consumption of red meats and avoid processed meats, limit the use of alcohol, limit consumption of salt and salty foods, do not smoke or chew tobacco and don’t use supplements to protect oneself against cancer.

In order to reduce one's likelihood of developing skin cancers it is recommended to reduce exposure to direct sunlight, avoid tanning beds and to always wear sunscreen while partaking in outdoor activities, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation.

As the leading cancer treatment and research facility in Northwest Arkansas, Highlands is dedicated to the advancement of cancer treatment and to providing patients with the best possible care and results.
