California State University San Bernardino Is Designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance/cyber Defense Education
Online, June 24, 2014 (Newswire.com) - California State University San Bernardino recently received the highly prestigious designation as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance/Cyber Defense Education (CAE IA/CD) from the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This designation covers academic years 2014 through 2021.
In the congratulatory letter to Dr. Tony Coulson, director of the Cyber Security Center, Karen Leuschner, the national CAE program director for the NSA, said, "Your ability to meet the increasing demands of the program criteria will serve the nation well in contributing to the protection of the National Information Infrastructure." She noted that cyber security education is the key to defending against those who would attempt to disrupt the nation's vital assets and core principles.
Since 2007, Dr. Tony Coulson has developed and implemented one of the nation's most comprehensive programs designed to prepare students for the emerging field of cyber security. The program emphasizes problem solving in creative ways. "Students learn about law, marketing, accounting, leadership and public administration," Coulson explains. "Then, we 'tech' them up." As an indicator of the caliber of student achievement, all 21 CSUSB cyber security students who attended the Cybercorps job fair in Washington, DC this year were successful in securing internships and permanent positions.
"This designation from the Department of Homeland Security is an honor for the College of Business and Public Administration (CBPA) at Cal State," says Lawrence C. Rose, dean of CBPA. "It is no small feat as Cal State is competing against elite public and private universities with national reputations and large faculties." According to Coulson, "There are 40,000 openings for cyber security professionals."
Certificates for the new designation will be presented during a ceremony dinner at the 18th Annual Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education in San Diego.
