Burning on the Bowery - Flying Machines to Headline Awards
Online, August 18, 2010 (Newswire.com) - EMI's Flying Machines will be joined by hip hop legend DJ Power of the Cold Crush Brothers, shoegazers Apollo Heights and vocal titan Sophia Ramos for a night of live music and celebration at The Fourth Annual New Century Awards beginning at 7pm. Flying Machines "On a Whim" is up for Record of the Year and Best Modern Rock Performance. Fans vote online in the People's Choice from September 13 - 19. Emerging acts Lauren O'Brien, Christina LaRocca, The Change Agents, Timothy Dark and David Chapin also appear.
Veteran booker Mike McHugh, called "The guts and glue of the downtown music scene." by Suzanne Vega, created the live aspect of the Peoples Choice votecast in 2006. It's a clever approach that garners some well deserved attention by allowing local bands to rub elbows digitally with popular acts. And he should know. For twenty five years McHugh has booked many that have broken nationally such as Regina Spektor, Gavin DeGraw and jazz bassist Tal Wilkenfeld. This is proof, he says, that New York is still a great pool for talent. "The votecast is exciting. The fans really get into it. It's a rollercoaster ride right up to midnight when the voting ends. One year we had a local band beat out the New York Dolls." Evan Ginzburg of Legends Radio interviews McHugh streaming live Wednesday, September 15 on http://www.LegendsRadio.net at 9:40 pm EST.
