When we recycle our money back into our economy we help American companies and American workers. When we send our dollars outside the country we support those countries' economies. It is really as simple as that.

Statistics show that for every manufacturing job we save, there are 6 to 10 jobs tied to it. Certain countries are capitalizing on our appetite for cheap goods and services. The question we need to ask ourselves here is-Are we REALLY saving money when we buy an item that is cheaper from a source outside of our borders? The rub is when you think you are saving money, you can often times purchase the same American-made item that does not cost much more and is of higher quality. On top of that, you have contributed to saving an American job; maybe it's your neighbor or maybe it's your own. When you buy products that are made outside of our borders, it can create a chain reaction that will result in many negative consequences. Sure it may seem like the pennies you are pinching are helping you get by in this economy and we know that every penny counts, but here is an example illustrating the long-term costs of your short-term actions.

Meet Joe. Joe lost his job in an American auto wheel plant. Outstanding Wheels Inc., an aluminum wheel supplier to many major U.S. automakers, closed its plant in Jonesville and fired 300 employees including Joe. The company expects to save $16.5 million annually in labor costs, made cuts because slumping vehicle sales mean less demand for wheels. Surrounding service businesses are impacted because they lost many of their regular customers that were once employed by the plant. The owner of the Good Eats had to lay-off 2 waitresses per shift and began performing more functions himself. Consequently he is placing a smaller food and supplies orders which impacts his suppliers. The supplier has to lay off drivers and consolidate routes also eliminating a warehouse position.

Joe was foreclosed on his home and unable to pay his bills, had to declare bankruptcy. Now, with a surplus of homes on the market, his realtor at ABC Realtors is finding it difficult to sell homes, and his mortgage lender has also noticed a decline in business. New home construction is down forcing a redirect of attention to the Home Remodeling segment. Meanwhile things have gotten so bad for Joe, he is unable to find anyone to hire him, or an affordable place to live. He's been relying on the government, but the money has just run out and he's forced to live on the street depending on the food pantry to get a hot meal.
