Boston Limited Debut The ARM®-Based Cluster That Delivers Data Centre Performance At 5W Per Node At IP EXPO 2012

Boston Limited is proud to present its ultra-low power ARM®-based server, the Boston Viridis, for the first time in the UK at IP EXPO 2012, Earls Court 2. Visit Boston on stand F14 for a live demonstration.

Boston Limited, the leading manufacturer of high performance, low-powered server, storage and clustered solutions, is proud to present its ultra-low power ARM®-based server, the Boston Viridis, for the first time in the UK at IP EXPO 2012. Visit Boston on stand F14 for a live demonstration.

Boston is the world's first company to manufacture ultra-low power servers based on ARM processor technology, whose chip designs power the Apple® iPhone®, iPad® and many other low-power consumer devices.

Unlike conventional x86 platforms, the Boston Viridis uses ultra-low power ARM-based System-on-Chips (SoC's). Consuming as little as 5 Watts per SoC, the Boston Viridis is designed specifically to provide supercomputing performance whilst delivering a 90% reduction in energy costs compared with conventional servers.

Provisioned within a 2U enclosure, each Boston Viridis unit contains up to 12 quad-node EnergyCards with built-in Layer-2 networking, plus storage in the form of up to 24 local SATA disks or MicroSD cards. Providing up to 192 cores and 48 nodes per enclosure, this highly dense solution contains up to 900 servers per industry standard 42U rack, providing customers with industry-leading power, space and cost savings.

Supported by Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS and Fedora v17+ distributions, the Boston Viridis has been shown to run popular software platforms including Cloud Management software from Openstack, Big Data technologies such as Hadoop, Cassandra, applications built in Java, Ruby on Rails, Python and the popular LAMP stack.

David Power, Head of HPC at Boston, said: "Boston is delighted to present our ARM-based server at this year's IP EXPO in London. We have used nearly 20 years of specialist experience in high-performance server manufacturing to come to market ahead of some of the world's leading IT companies.

"These building blocks of high end computing are set to radically change the economics of large scale data centres, sparking innovation in emerging fields such as cloud computing, data modelling and analysis - often called 'Big Data' - scientific research and media streaming."

Boston will be publishing benchmark results and further information on the Viridis platform on our dedicated technical blog, Throughout the event, Boston will be uploading a number of posts, covering real world application benchmark results, power measurements running various workloads, as well as some exciting news about how Boston are running x86 binaries on the Viridis.

About Boston Limited
With nearly 20 years of trading within the distribution and OEM marketplace, Boston continues to lead the way in providing the latest high-performance, power-optimized technologies into the data centre, HPC, ISP, Military, VFX, Enterprise and Broadcast markets with multi-award winning server, storage, workstation and clustered solutions. Since the successful launch of Boston IT Solutions (India) Private Limited in 2009, we announced the launch of Boston Server & Storage Solutions GmbH in 2010. Expansion into both regions has been driven purely by market demand for alternate vendors providing high-performance and high value-add systems. As our global reach continues to expand we plan on opening further global facilities to improve and expand the services we offer.
