Fernando Torres, a Carlo Ancelotti signing. Romelu Lukaku, an Andre Villas Boas signing & Demba Ba, a Rafael Benitez signing all fight it out under Jose Mourinho for that final spot in the XI. Barring the Champions Cup final, I'm quite impressed with Romelu Lukaku's performances. He looks the most determined to get a good bit of game time this season. He presses the opponents well and sometimes manages to get a shot away out of nothing. Lukaku is a combination of both strength and pace, something I have seen only in forwards like Aguero and Tevez.

I'm not impressed with Torres nor am I disappointed with him. He can get his passes right, got a few tricks up his sleeve, knows how to get away from defenders, but it's just the finishing that puts him second to Lukaku for a place in the XI. Finishing is one of the most important traits a striker needs to have and Torres is lagging behind in getting a shot away, let alone the shot being on target. Our last friendly is coming up against AS Roma on Saturday night. Torres should be starting in that game as he hasn't got enough game time this preseason and if possible Mourinho should play him alongside Lukaku, because that's how Torres used to play when we bought him from Liverpool. Even Lukaku played alongside Shane Long, Marcus Rosenberg & Peter Odemwingie when at West Brom, so why not give it a try?

Demba Ba has been an isolated figure this pre-season. While all the talk has been about how our new signings have played and how the recently returned players fared in the confederations cup, no one seems to care about Ba. Even when on the field, Ba looks clueless. He's just looking at passing the ball to one of the midfielders while they work their magic. The style of play clearly doesn't suit him here. At Newcastle the reason he was so successful was because he used to be on the receiving end of many crosses and would usually find himself on the scoresheet. But here, we don't cross too much. It's all about getting a few passes together in the final third, individual skill or counter-attacking. That's how most of our goals have come in the past season. It's better Ba leaves Chelsea or he's going to be finding himself on the bench for most of the games this season. Don't get me wrong, it's not that Ba is not a good striker, it's just that the fancy style of play at Chelsea doesn't suit him.
