Blaine Greer's New Book "Willow Sieve Chronicles - Eavesdropping From the Wilderness" Tale of an Impetuous Man's Wild Journey Down the Mississippi in an Old Leaking Canoe.

Newest publication "Willow Sieve Chronicles—Eavesdropping from the Wilderness" from Fulton Books author Blaine Greer is the detailed day by day account of the author's experiences throughout a misguided attempt to paddle the length of the treacherous Mississippi River in a borrowed aluminum canoe accompanied solely by a gregarious springer spaniel lap dog known as Shocker.

Blaine Greer, a risk-taking novice adventurer, writer, as well as a teacher, public school administrator, and university professor, has completed his most recent book “Willow Sieve Chronicles—Eavesdropping from the Wilderness”:  a delightful and entertaining story of the author’s spur of the moment decision to canoe the length of the Mississippi accompanied solely by a spoiled, extraverted family pet; foolishly thinking that a PhD in the late 20th Century could reenact the exploits of early explorers.

A self-proclaimed novice canoeist-adventurer, Greer has survived a number of daunting river quests. “Shocker and I have canoed something in the range of 15,000 miles on the great rivers of North America. My prima donna springer spaniel sidekick has been master at the helm every mile along the way. Shock has not only been my sole companion on every challenging adventure, the freckle-nosed clown and affectionate pet never met a stranger. He served as the invaluable personality of our crew.”

Published by Fulton Books, Blaine Greer’s book invites the reader to climb aboard the battered, borrowed, open aluminum canoe christened Willow Sieve and ride along from the headwaters to the Gulf.

Caught in the throes of a middle-age crisis, Blaine was struck by a vision of younger days and happier times. That impulse instantly gave rise to an impetuous brain-child, which became an escapist obsession. At that critical juncture, Blaine begins frenetically gathering all that was naively presumed to be needed for a long river journey as quickly as possible. In two days, Blaine was driving north toward the headwaters. Sixteen hours later, the clueless canoeist, embarks upon a great American adventure. Soon, Blaine was standing chest deep in a wild rice bog with a terrified dog wrapped around his neck; frantically clinging to the canoe while being pelted with sleet driven by a brutal early Arctic nor’wester less than seventy hours after the initial impulse.

Blaine and Shocker endure wind, electrical storms, torrential rain, fog, freezing rain, bitter cold, sandstorms, floodwater, cascades, collisions, punctures, and near miss with a tornado…there were encounters with river pirates, an escaped convict, standoff with a street gang and seemingly incessant punishing wind often punctuated by farcical, sometime tragic “dryland scrambles” that arose during attempts to reestablish contact with civilization in order to replenish supplies. Those forays yielded a vagrancy charge, visit to “The Twilight Zone” and an overstated reenactment of “Hell’s a’ Poppin” and numerous chance meetings with colorful characters and real river people. In spite of unbelievable setbacks, the adventurous misfits somehow managed to escape to the peace and serenity of the natural world.
