One of the founding members of the West Coast Funk movement, Wiley's career spans 50 years with inspiration often drawn from major global events of the time. The exhibition at Bivins Gallery will focus on works created over the past two decades, including paintings and drawings that explore themes of life and death, global warming, pop culture, religion, and politics. Wiley's Zen-like outlook toward his darker subjects challenges audiences to consider the nature of humanity from an optimistic perspective.

An activist, artist, and pioneer, Wiley's work is characterized as uniquely authentic. About work and life, Wiley says, "Go with your gut feeling, your instinct. No matter what is being denied or offered, the true 'you' knows better. You have to learn to hear it." It is this integrity that punctuates Wiley's creative process and this honesty that allows those in the art arena to continue to see him as a driving force in contemporary art.

William T. Wiley has been and continues to be frequently honored with awards and accolades. His work can be found in prestigious private and public collections around the world. Among many other museums, Wiley's work can be seen at the Hirshhorn, LACMA, MoMA, and the National Museum of Art.
