Richard Hickam's style, technique and influences are constantly evolving, yet his rich palette and unique characterizations make his work distinguishable. Hickam's career began in the 1970s and was initially influenced by the photorealistic movement that surrounded him. Hickam's affinity for pushing conventional boundaries transformed his style in the 1980s and 1990s, where his brushstroke loosened and took on an energetic gestural impasto, resulting in a series of large-scale abstractions. In the late 1990s, Hickam began exploring figurative abstraction. Discernable from this body of work are his portraits, whose striking features reflect a collection of inspirations, often combining physical aspects of multiple characters in Hickam's own life. Through all his stylistic transitions, Hickam's bold handling of color and tone remain the main subjects of his paintings.

Richard Hickam has been a celebrated American painter for over forty years, and his works have been exhibited in museums across the United States. His career has been the topic of numerous publications, and his works can be found in both private and public collections, including the Richmond Museum of Art, the Columbus Museum of Art, the Canton Museum of Art, and the Beck Center Museum.
