Bike Recycling Project Provides Practical Skills For The Future

Groundwork Derby & Derbyshire is launching a county wide bike recycling project aimed at providing youngsters who have previously been suspended or excluded from school with a practical skill for the future.

The initiative has seen Adam Harries, Project Officer, at Groundwork Derby & Derbyshire, collecting old unclaimed bikes from local police stations and organising collections from the general public, in order to hold bike maintenance courses in local schools.
The project also works to reduce landfill in the local area, which has been praised by not only the local community but by the local authorities.

Kirsty Youngs, Managing Director at Groundwork Derby & Derbyshire, said: "Our bike recycling project has so far been a great success, but our Lottery funding is quickly running out and Adam is struggling to run the project single-handedly. This is why we are making an appeal for volunteers to come forward and help us in this worthwhile cause.

"The project not only helps youngsters, but we also repair some of the bikes that we collect to sell on to those in the community who perhaps cannot afford a brand new bike. All of the proceeds we make then go back into the project to pay for tools and spare parts that we cannot find second hand."

Volunteers are required to drive the collection van once a fortnight, and to help with bike repairs and maintenance work, and Groundwork Derby & Derbyshire are happy for any volunteers to pledge whatever time they have to the project to make it a success.
