Becker's Celebrates 40th Anniversary 'Rubilee' in West Hartford

Family Marks Ruby Milestone with Charity Donation and $10,000 Jewelry Giveaway

When Paul & Risa Becker opened Becker's Diamonds & Fine Jewelry in West Hartford in 1978, their mission was to give every customer the Make It Perfect experience. Since then, generations of delighted brides-to-be have said “yes” to a signature ruby red ring box from Becker’s. To express their deep appreciation for the loyal customers who have become family over the past 40 years, Becker’s is hosting special events and contributing to local charities to mark their Ruby anniversary.

“My late wife Risa and I were always overwhelmed by the support our small business received from the West Hartford and Saybrook communities,” said Owner and President Paul Becker. “To show our gratitude, we dedicated ourselves to becoming active civic leaders, seeking out groups that would most benefit from our involvement and participation.”

Over the years, the jeweler has donated its time, money and merchandise to numerous organizations within the Greater Hartford area, including Make-A-Wish® Connecticut, Nutmeg Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Greater Hartford Arts Council, Urban League of Greater Hartford, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, Wadsworth Athenaeum, Nutmeg State Games, The Jewish Federation, The Jim and Pat Calhoun Cardiology Research Endowment Fund for UCONN Health Center, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, and the Capital Community College Foundation, among others. Becker’s has also partnered with French Cleaners to keep families warm by hosting holiday coat drives.

When Risa Becker was stricken with ovarian cancer and a subsequent brain tumor, she fought any way she could, which included tirelessly fundraising for brain tumor and cancer research. In 2013, she found the strength to form “Team Becker” for the annual National Ovarian Cancer Run and Walk in East Hartford and raise over $10,000 to aid research and care of patients right here in Connecticut. Sadly, Risa passed away in September of 2013.

Later that year, Scott Becker and his wife Lori accepted the Gladys and Warren Phinney Lifetime Volunteerism Award from Easter Seals Capital Region & Eastern CT on Risa's behalf. Her son recalled the incredible passion Risa had for Easter Seals, demonstrated by her and Paul’s boundless commitment to the nonprofit and the people with disabilities that they serve.

The Becker family will present Easter Seals with a $5,000 donation at the store’s VIP Red Box party on June 14. Local political and business leaders and will join neighbors and board members from multiple charities for the invitation-only event.

“Risa was a determined, strong woman who inspired all of us in the business and more importantly through her charity work,” said Becker. “She wanted us to persevere both personally and professionally. The best way for us to honor her memory is to continue to give back to the community as she did.”

As a thank you to all of the customers who have contributed to Becker’s success and longevity, the jeweler is offering two chances to win a $5,000 shopping spree. During the 40th Anniversary Red Box Sale from Monday, June 18 through Saturday, June 23, shoppers at both locations can take advantage of 40 percent off select in-stock jewelry in every category, from wedding bands to fine jewelry.

Becker’s will announce winners of the two $5,000 gift certificates the week of June 25. Winners will be chosen at random from among those who made purchases during the sale.

“It has been our privilege to serve countless members of our community for four decades,” said Becker. “As we reflect on all of the wonderful people who have graced our stores, we hope everyone will join our celebration and save on the perfect gift for a loved one because that is why we started this local business in the first place,” Paul said.
