Streamline Surgical are pleased to announce the appointment of Toni Russo as the teams Bariatric nurse consultant.

Toni joins the team with a wealth of experience. She qualified at Guy's Hospital, London in 1987 and then as a midwife at St Mary's Hospital London in 1990. Toni eventually chose to specialise in fetal medicine and genetics/screening.

In 2000, following her own success with bariatric surgery, Toni underwent training with obesity surgeon Dr Vincent Frering in Lyon and went on to established the first nurse led bariatric service in the UK attracting patients from the UK and Norway. She later attended the Allergan® Surgeons' course in New York City and the Allergan® Advanced Course in Chicago enabling her to teach multidisciplinary teams all aspects of laparoscopic adjustable gastric band (LapBand®) management.

During Toni's career she has to date trained over 60 people and was the first nurse consultant in the UK. She is a BOMSS (affiliate) member on the new working party to establish a university accredited course for bariatric clinicians.

Toni's role at Streamline Surgical includes undertaking all aspects of pre and post op support for all bariatric patients at Streamline Surgical's London centre. She has developed and manages the web forum to facilitate contact with patients. Toni's role has been developed so that past and present patients can easily make contact with a bariatric nurse via the phone, email or forum.

During her 9 years in the weight-loss surgery field, she has shared patients with some of the most eminent bariatric surgeons in Europe and the USA, including Streamline Surgical's founding surgeons Mr. Shaw Somers and Mr. Guy Slater. She has a particular interest in women's' health and is especially keen to support women who are planning pregnancies.

In keeping with the philosophy of the Streamline Surgical team as a whole, she believes that if information is presented in an honest and comprehensive way, all potential patients can be supported in reclaiming responsibility for their own health.

As Toni is a bariatric patient she is well placed to understand the particular needs of people considering surgery and living with the changes that it brings.
Shaw Somers comments: "We are delighted that Toni has joined the team as she brings with her a wealth of experience that we know our patients will find invaluable."
