Award-Winning Food and Nutrition Management Program Offers Numerous Benefits

This press release promotes the Food and Nutrition Management offering at Centennial College, which teaches students through a practical approach that includes lab practice and projects.

Centennial College's Food and Nutrition Management program — the longest established two-year post-secondary offering of its kind in the Greater Toronto Area — prepares students to fill roles as professionals in the dynamic and growing healthcare and food service industry.

There is a continuous need for qualified Food Service Managers, Food Service Coordinators, Dietary Managers, Quality Control Technicians and Diet Technicians, who participate in the provision of nutritional care in a variety of settings. Among these institutional and community environments settings are: hospitals, seniors' residences, nursing homes and extended care facilities.

The Canadian Society of Nutrition Management (CSNM) accredits Centennial College's program. As such, graduates are eligible for membership in the CSNM and the Ontario Society of Nutrition Management. CSNM membership is a requirement of the Ontario's Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care to work in a long-term care facility and many acute care facilities.

The two-year food service program is open to anyone who has completed an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, or has mature student status (19 years or older). In addition, there are English and mathematics prerequisites that must be met. Due to the popularity of this offering — which holds the President's Academic Program Recognition Award for Preparation for Job Market, Student Satisfaction, Graduate Satisfaction, Employer Satisfaction and Quality of The Learning Experience — admission is highly competitive and spots fill quickly.

While learning a combination of nutrition and food service, business, and human relations skills, students benefit from access to Centennial's Hospitality Management Centre. In this mock environment, students learn the practical aspects of quantity food preparation and service and conduct experiments to learn the physical properties of food. On-campus classes serve as preparation for a seven-week supervised work experience in a healthcare facility, which leads to employment preparedness upon graduation.

Established in 1966, Centennial College offers programs in business, community and health studies, communications, science and engineering technology, general arts, hospitality and transportation. Centennial has a presence in several countries around the globe and currently hosts 5,000 international students at its Toronto campuses.
