Aurora Day School Names New Headmaster

Innovative, Local Educator Puts Unique Talents and Experience to Work at Tucker Campus

The Aurora Day School has named Matthew Tarpley, EdS as Headmaster for the Tucker, Georgia campus.

Matt was born and raised in Decatur, Georgia. His unique experience as an educator and an entrepreneur have given him a results oriented sensitivity, and that's what drew him to Aurora. After getting a degree in marketing in the mid-1990's, Matt founded a successful marketing firm in Birmingham, AL where he worked with small businesses to improve products and services. Then he decided that what he really wanted to do was teach.

Just prior to coming to Aurora, Matt spent more than a decade with the Gwinnett County Public Schools as a teacher and camp director and worked with Spectrum Camps and Clubs.

"I am passionate about and committed to putting kids first," says, Tarpley. "Our job - education - is a most important and valuable one."

Matt has a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education from Brenau University, a Master of Education degree in Administration, Leadership and Policy from the University of Georgia and an EdS in Teaching and Learning from Piedmont College.

"Matt's exceptional education and his experience in developing and directing original teaching environments and summer camp programs are invaluable to Aurora," said Kellie Huff, CEO of Aurora Strategies, Inc. "We're looking forward to what his leadership and innovation will bring to our amazing kids."

Tired of the lip service paid to innovation in teaching in the public school system, Matt decided to take his gifts to a private school that was advancing alternative educational methods, and that's how he found Aurora.

"I believe that all people have the ability to learn; therefore, if the students are not learning the way I teach, then I need to teach the way they learn," he says. "I believe in using the most effective tools and methodologies we can to help kids learn as effectively as possible. At Aurora we're utilizing proven, neuroscience-based strategies to get results that I've not experienced previously in my career - both with learning challenged students and neurotypical students. "

Among other things, Matt was a member of the board of directors for the Gwinnett County Association of Educators and is very active in his community and his church, Hamilton Mill United Methodist, where he developed an exemplary special needs ministry and is a Sunday School teacher.

Matt and his wife Stacey live in Dacula, Georgia and have three children; Allie, Becca and Miller.
