Angels Among Us Helps Patient's Families During Christmas Season

Employees at Highlands Oncology Group support patients and families of patients

Angels among us (AAU) is a group of employees with Highlands Oncology Group who work together throughout the year to raise money to assist patients during their cancer treatments. Money raised may be used to help with groceries, gas, utilities, medicine or other expenses that patients may need assistance with. The main reason this fund was established was to help with purchasing Christmas gifts for those patients with young children who might need a little extra help around the holidays.

Throughout the year this group of employee’s work to fundraise by hosting bake sales, selling handmade jewelry, various raffles, an annual chili cook-off, and other fundraisers throughout the year.

I can't put into words how much this impacted all of us involved.

Being a cancer patient and a parent brings about several obstacles. Often, one of these struggles pertains to a family’s finances. AAU works to alleviate holiday stress on families that might not be able to shop for, or enjoy, Christmas.

Patients are nominated by employees at Highlands Oncology Group. HOG employees are then given a Christmas list from each child in the family to shop from. The gifts are wrapped, returned to HOG, and distributed to the families.

This year a local 4H club got involved in the effort and helped shop for one of the AAU families. Members of the 4H club, Viney Grove/Savoy (the oldest 4H club in Washington county), were able to shop for and wrap gifts for one of the families nominated.

“I can’t put into words how much this impacted all of us involved”, stated Calinda Green, who is one of the 4H sponsors for Viney Grove/Savoy as well as one of the Physician Nurses at HOG.
