As Marketing & Solutions Director (CMO) at Huawei, Anand Narang kept a promise he never made to the IMT Ghaziabad PGDM Executive batch. It was of holding their unwavering interest right through his hour long talk on International Marketing and Human Resources. It was in the areas of Business Management and - probably more importantly - managing life in business.

For about ten years Narang worked at Nokia, connecting people. "I've spent ten years out of the 17 that I've worked outside India," he said, it gave him an international exposure to business life and the business of life. "There's a difference." Business life, obviously, is related to the career and its growth. It is the Business of Life that held interest. "Managing your career and your relationships will take you ahead in life."

He kept the class riveted with anecdotes that supported his observations. Going through the three trends Business Trend, Consumer Trend and Innovation Marketing Trend, he backed them up with solid examples.

"When you first enter B-School and see a slide which says, 'Recession is here to stay' it is not very exciting. It is the picture the world has seen over the recent years." He was abroad during that time, and it was tough. "During such times companies are looking for a bigger bang for their buck," Narang observed. "During a recession, companies may have a total travel ban."

The way out is to do your job using creativity. "That is what companies are looking for from their Marketing people. You've got to come out with some answers. The existing standards will not work," he said.

How? Harnessing new technology is the way forward. Today, more and more companies are using online free networking sites like Twitter, Facebook and Skype to their advantage, and are able to communicate with clients, distributors and customers. "You could get on the phone, speak to a distributor, call the promoter... you need to find ways of getting the job done despite the travel ban." Forget visions of travelling Business Class. Economy is the way, and companies are looking at better Returns on Investment (RoI).

As international organizations seek to enter India, they are employing Indian managers. Because they find, nobody knows the country the way our people do. However, companies are looking at employing people with multi country experience as well, and knowledge of foreign languages, especially Chinese is an added advantage. "If China is the future, why are we learning French?" he quipped.

Get out of your comfort zone. Get real.
