Alma Olena Mitchell celebrated her 102nd birthday on February 14th at Homestead Long Term Care of Baird, where she is currently living.

Mitchell was born on February 14, 1914, in Ponatock, Mississippi. Her siblings included 8 girls and 5 boys. She grew up in Oklahoma until the age of 9, then traveled in a covered wagon for five days to move to Abilene.

She married Charles Douglas Mitchell in 1945 at the age of 31.  The couple had 3 daughters, and Alma enjoys all 5 of her grandchildren.

Mitchell was a homemaker who worked hard to later own a café and Girling Home Health. She enjoys crocheting and cooking.

When asked about what she attributes her longevity to, Mitchell said, “My faith, God and hard work. I don’t feel like I’m 102.” She said her biggest personal milestone is being able to celebrate her 102nd birthday with family and friends.

When asked what advice she has for younger generations, Mitchell said, “Stay in school, get an education and learn to be independent.”

“We wanted to have at least 102 guests come and sign a book in her honor. We were so grateful that 106 people showed up to celebrate Alma's birthday,” says Administrator Scott Davis. Mitchell opened a signed letter from President Barack Obama, and attendees enjoyed cake and ice cream. At the end of the celebration, 103 balloons were released to represent her age plus one for good luck.

The City of Baird posted an announcement on the city's public announcement board in front of the court house and Becky’s Flowers graciously donated flowers for center pieces for the celebration.
