Built by Alces Flight and Esteem Systems with hardware from Dell EMC, the latest cluster upgrade adds twenty-eight enterprise-class Nvidia Tesla GPUs, aiming to exploit advancements being made by the CVR team in cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM).

“We are pleased to be working with Esteem Systems and Alces Flight as we continue our mission to carry out fundamental research on viruses and viral diseases,” said Dr. David Bhella, Director for the Scottish Centre for Macromolecular Imaging (SCMI) at MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research. “CVR conducts fundamental research into viruses and viral diseases with the aim of improving health. With our latest solution upgrade we can align our efforts on a greater understanding of infection biology.”

Focusing on the latest advancements in cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), which enables scientists to see the shape of biomolecules at the atomic level and understand how they interact to perform their functions, the newly deployed Nvidia GPU cluster and GPFS storage solution enables the SCMI consortium to continue advancements in the field of structural biology.

“When working with cutting edge science we understand that we must continue to evolve in order to keep pace with the discoveries being made,” said David Edwards, Public Sector Sales Manager with Esteem Systems, “That is why when approaching this project we choose the Dell C4100 series GPU enabled compute nodes.”

“In looking at the architecture of the CVR solution we not only wanted to bring them in line with the latest equipment and technology available in cryo-EM, we also wanted to look to the future,” said Wil Mayers, Technical Director of Alces Flight, “By working with the Alces Flight the team is gaining not only the integration and support needed to keep their solution in peak condition, they also gain access to a uniform environment which can work across a range of different platforms.  This means that as the field of structural biology evolves the HPC solution can easily evolve with it.”

The solution upgrade has been installed in the Sir Michael Stoker Building, the University of Glasgow’s dedicated home for providing a unique research environment for both young and established scientists wishing to apply a holistic approach to virology.

About MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (CVR)

Established in 2010, the CVR represents the UK’s largest grouping of human and veterinary virologists.  More than 20 principal investigators, and their associated teams, make up the research core of the CVR giving a total staff and student complement in excess of 170. This is supplemented with affiliates from the Boyd Orr Centre for Population and Ecosystem Health, Health Protection Scotland and NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, thus creating a critical mass of researchers dedicated to the study of human and animal viral diseases.

The CVR is embedded within the Institute of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation at the University of Glasgow which provides excellent research opportunities to investigate virus-host interactions and immune response to virus infection.
