Air Force General Don Hard Weighs Implications of President Obama's Space Program

President Obama's space policy seems to be leading to the commercialization of the industry, according to retired General Don Hard.

Retired General Don Hard, former Deputy Commander for Launch and Control Systems at the Space and Missile Systems Center supporting the NASA space program, says on a video that while President Obama seems to be moving toward commercialization, rather than government control and financing of America's space program, his approach to the U.S. space program can have short-term negative effects on industry. In a video posted at http://www.nuuko.com/, that was prepared several days before Neil Armstrong and other former astronauts voiced opinions on the Obama policy, Gen. Hard says "the notion of commercialized man space flight is one that's hard for a lot of people to get used to. The immediate fall out will be a pretty severe impact to the industrial base."

The video was released by NuuKo, Inc., which is a new site focused on a global discussion of enterprise issues. Doug Poretz, a co-founder of NuuKo, said that the video was released ahead of the site being launched "due to its relevancy to the higher level discussion of President Obama's approach to the U.S. space program. At NuuKo, our focus is on how any issue impacts the enterprise, whether it is a corporation, non-profit or government," Poretz said. "In preparing for the initial launch of NuuKo, we have prepared several video presentations, including one with General Hard, because we believe that enterprise executives will be interested in how a change in the future of the space program may translate into a problem or opportunity for them." Poretz said.
