Advanced Eye Hospital Organises Eye Donation Awareness Walk
An Awareness Walk for Eye Donation on 12th January, 2014 organized by Advanced Eye Hospital and Institute (AEHI), Navi Mumbai Hospital at 8:00 am and end at Shivaji Chowk in Vashi.
Online, January 27, 2014 (Newswire.com) - Advanced Eye Hospital and Institute (AEHI), Navi Mumbai has organized an Awareness Walk for Eye Donation on 12th January, 2014. The walk aptly titled "Tamaso Ma Jyotir Gamaya - From Darkness towards Light" will commence at Advanced Eye Hospital at 8:00 am and end at Shivaji Chowk in Vashi.
11 lakh Indians are suffering from corneal blindness and there is only one hope for them - Corneal Transplant - a surgery to replace Cornea (outer clear part of eye) which will enable them to see again. In addition to these 11 Lakh people, another 25,000 are added each year. Unfortunately, the wait to get a cornea through eye donation is a never ending one as the rates of eye donation are abysmally low in India - just 20,000 corneal transplants are done each year. Prevalent socio-cultural beliefs and lack of awareness are the biggest roadblocks in making eye donation a universal phenomenon.
AEHI and One Vision Health & Research Foundation have embarked upon a journey to change this dismal situation. With a firm belief that "Awareness precedes choice and choice precedes results", AEHI has taken the first step in this direction. With this walk, AEHI aims to create awareness in Navi Mumbai about eye pledging and eye donation. The collective power of people walking together can make a difference and spread the message far and wide. This will help make Navi Mumbai a model city for eye donation and set an example to the rest of India.
This walk will see top doctors, businessmen, corporate organizations and other people joining hands to increase eye donation. We are expecting a crowd of more than 1000 people for the walk. Many other hospitals like MITR, MGM, some schools like Avalon and Lawrence, and a host of other organizations in and around Navi Mumbai have expressed their desire to participate in the event.
