Adult Braces Specialist Explains National Nutrition Month To San Diego Parents

Dr. Eisenhuth, an adult braces provider, explains National Nutrition Month to parents in San Diego.

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA -National Nutrition Month is coming up. Celebrated in March and sponsored by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the slogan for this year is "Get Your Plate In Shape."

Created in 1973 as a week-long event, "National Nutrition Week" became a month-long campaign in 1980 due to the growing public interest in nutrition, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics website.

"The campaign focuses on the importance of eating nutritious food and exercising regularly," says Dr. Eisenhuth, a San Diego adult braces provider. "Introducing stable nutritional habits early could prove to be beneficial for children throughout their lives."

Picking nutritional food is important for healthy teeth. The foods that parents choose for their children not only affect their general health; it can affect their teeth and gums as well.

Choice of food and eating patterns among children and teenagers are key factors that affect how quickly they develop decay. When plaque contacts with sugar, acid is produced. This acid may attack the teeth for at least 20 minutes and eventually lead to decay, according to the American Dental Association.

For children in braces, eating healthy food is important as well. Debris can hide around brackets and wires. Also, sugary drinks stain the teeth, leaving white spots when the braces are removed.

There are a number of things that parents can do for their children's nutritional and dental health.

• Maintain a sound healthy diet
• Drink water
• Limit junk
• Brush twice a day and floss at night
• Schedule cleanings every six months
• Keep a food diary and compare it to the recommendations of the food pyramid

If a child has poor nutrition, the teeth could suffer. Enforcing healthy eating habits early is key. Transitioning a child from a junk food diet to a healthy one may be difficult, but work together and it could be achieved.
