Abu Dhabi Medical Congress Hosts The Launch Of First Emirates Society Of Emergency Medicine

Symposium assessed implementation of strategies to streamline multi-agency response to emergencies in the region

The Emirates Medical Association (EMA) has launched the first Emirates Society of Emergency Medicine (ESEM). Forming the society is considered a critical milestone in the development of this new specialty in the United Arab Emirates and it will be a professional umbrella for all emergency care providers to network and collaborate. The venue for the launch was the Abu Dhabi Medical Congress which will conclude tomorrow (16 October 2012) at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), UAE.

The official launch of ESEM took place during the 10th Middle East Emergency Medicine Conference and was attended by Dr. Khalid Almansouri, EMA Board member, Dr. Saleh Fares, President of ESEM, other elected board members as well as representatives from Abu Dhabi Medical Congress and the media. The Middle East Emergency Medicine Conference forms part of the Abu Dhabi Medical Congress' multi-track conference programme covering six medical specialties including Primary Healthcare, Patient Safety, Rehabilitation, Dentistry, Nursing as well as Emergency Medicine.

ESEM was established by a group of emergency medicine physicians from different hospitals in the UAE. The elected Board of Directors for the ESEM are; Dr. Saleh Fares, President, Dr. Mahmoud Ghanaiem, Vice President, Dr. Ayesha Almemari, General Secretary, Dr. Moein Fikree, Chair of Cultural Committee and Dr. Abdel Noureldin, Chair of Scientific Committee.

According to Dr. Almemari, General Secretary of ESEM and Consultant Emergency Medicine and Critical Care Physician at Mafraq Hospital, UAE: "The vision of ESEM is to develop and maintain high standards of emergency medicine practice in the UAE as well as to function as the networking body connecting all emergency medicine providers practicing in different emergency departments across the UAE. The society aims to document the scientific and social communication amongst all doctors, nurses and paramedics working in the field of emergency medicine through scientific conferences, workshops and meetings, by writing medical research and conducting scientific and statistical research."

ESEM will also work on promoting emergency medicine among medical school graduates and will establish different subcommittees to represent different subgroups within the emergency medicine specialty such as groups for resident, nurses and paramedics. Dr. Almemari mentioned that ESEM is planning to work on raising public awareness of emergency medicine specialty in the UAE, such as the use of the emergency department and common emergency department encountered clinical conditions.

Running alongside the Emergency Medicine Conference is an exhibition that has expanded from 7,000 sqm in 2011 to more than 9,000 sqm this year, with more than 110 exhibitors from 25 different countries including Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), Mubadala, Al Noor Hospital, Bactiguard, Pfizer, AMT & Burjeel Hospital. Abu Dhabi Medical Congress is supported by the UAE Ministry of Health, Health Authority-Abu Dhabi (HAAD) and Dubai Health Authority (DHA).
