5 Steps to a Practical and Profitable Image

As shallow as it is, people are judged by how they look. In fact, clothing and demeanor reveal so much, from origins and education levels to probable income, snap judgments are made all the time.

What can be done to harness the "pre-judgment" power that is just natural human nature, so that it is beneficial, whether it be in the classroom, climbing the corporate ladder, staying home with kids, or entertaining at home? Here are five steps to creating a practical and profitable personal image:

1. Make Appearance a Priority

To young people that are into fashion, how they look may be their only priority. When they are older, however, they may find that other things take up more of their time. Often, the busyness of taking care of others results in the person losing themselves in the process. Remember: People treat others how they treat themselves. If they ignore themselves, others may ignore them as well or they will be remembered for the wrong reasons.

2. Build a Style File

To begin this process, one should flip through a few magazines or click around online. As clothing or home decor looks are spotted that they are drawn to, they should be kept and collected in a file. After a while, a pattern of elements and styles will emerge. Some great styling ideas can also be picked up this way.

3. Shop In the Closet (or Home)

Before heading to the mall, look through the clothes closet or other spaces in the home. Use the style file to see if any of the looks can be duplicated, from what is owned already. The pieces may not look exactly the same like what is in the picture, but try approximating the look as closely as possible. This is a very easy way to get an up-to-date look without spending anything!

4. Clear the Clutter

It may be hard for a person to figure out what they really have because they have so much. If this is the case, getting rid of the things that they don't wear or use, so that they can see what they really have to work with, is the only answer. In short, they should clear out all of the clutter that is bringing them down and zapping their energy. Once they clear the mess, they will look and feel like they are in control - instead of totally out of control and incapable of handling more. For real time help to sort through the wardrobe in just four simple steps, "Organize It" is a self-paced online program, designed just for this purpose.

5. Strive for Consistency

Strive to present a consistency polished image. Anyone can clean up for a special occasion. But making it a priority to consistently look good, will not only help a person to feel better about themselves, others around will consistently treat them with respect because they will know what to expect from them. Celebrities don't just look good on the red carpet, they usually look good whenever they are seen - where they can potentially be photographed. Even so, a polished image doesn't have to be expensive or time-consuming to be effective. Striving for a consistent look every time before walking out the door, will make a delightful difference.
