300 Pounds of Trash Cleaned From Siesta Key Beach at World Oceans Day Beach Cleanup by Beach.com

300 pounds of trash removed from Siesta Key Beach, FL

Volunteers pulled more than 300 pounds of trash from Siesta Key Beach this weekend at the Beach.com World Oceans Day Beach Cleanup. The Boys & Girls Club of Sarasota, Stream2Sea sunscreen, Sarasota County Sea Grant of Florida and other organizations worked to clean the beach. The event kicked off bright and early with sunrise beach yoga, followed by a two-hour long cleanup with live music from The Garbage Men Band and raffle with prizes including freediving certification and more.

The free and family-friendly event hosted by Beach.com was a celebration of World Oceans Day, an international observance day to raise awareness of ocean conservation. Sarasota locals of all ages came out to learn about ocean conservation and plastic pollution with demonstrations led by Armando Ubeda, a representative from Florida Sea Grant and the University of Florida. Also in attendance was Stream2Sea reef-safe sunscreen and Sarasota County Marine Conservationists.

Of the 300 pounds of trash collected, plastic bottles, cigarettes and aluminum cans were the most prevalent litter. This beach cleanup is the first of Beach.com’s latest initiative to promote responsible tourism. “While we’re busy promoting travel to the world’s best beach destinations, we also want to be sure to preserve our beaches and oceans for generations to come,” says Yasmin Parsloe of Beach.com. “That’s why we’re hosting events just like this to raise awareness of ocean conservation and connect with communities on a local level.”

World Oceans Day is a global celebration that takes place on June 8, with hundreds of events around the world celebrating our oceans. Beach.com, a Sarasota-based startup, partnered with Sarasota County to host the official World Oceans Day Beach Cleanup on Siesta Key Beach. The two young ladies and Sarasota natives behind Beach.com, Tara Caguiat and Yasmin Parsloe, are passionate about saving the ocean and raising awareness on a community level. “We knew that the Sarasota community values its beach, we just had no idea more than 300 people would come out to show it!” says Tara.
